anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
ok, i have been buying rolls of halves from the bank. i've saved all the 1969 and earlier ones, but i was wondering if there are any rare dates or keys i should look for in clad before i take them back to the bank. (a different branch that i rarely use) :D

That surprises me that you would fine those coins in circulation. I have not, but do not regularly check half-dollar rolls. Good finds. The Great Ag |

The kennedy 1964 is 90% silver!!!

Kennedy 1974-D. Look for a double die on "RUS" of TRUST on the front. Mint mark is on the bottom, middle of the front as well. Under the neck, above the date. MS-63 is $150.00 RedBook. You can probably turn that into 8-10, 1oz rounds of AG.

Re: anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
I pull the following from bank halves:
- Any proofs - You can sell these on ebay for about 1.5x face (Sell them as Impaired) - 1987 D&P These were not released into circulation - If you find 2002, 2003,2004,2005, 2006 pull the better ones - Check your 1964-D for either a "Triple Die Obverse" or a "Double Die Obverse" You can see it on the "TRUST" look at the leg of the "R" Here are some more to add to Silverwood keepers 1893 Columbian Expo Commemorative 1954 Booker T Washington / Carver 1951 Booker T Washington 1991 Mount Rushmore 1995 Atlanta Olympics Panama - Medio- Balboas - These use the same composition as the US halves inc. 40% from 65 on. Best of luck with your search. 65GT350 |
Re: anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
i have no idea how many $ worth i've bought. but the coffee can is pretty full of clad halves maybe $1000-$1200 worth? i've found $31 face of 40% and maybe 6-7 90%. strange thing is, is that the only 90% i've found searching rolls is franklins and worn out libertys. no 1964 kennedys. oh, and i found 1 gem 1989 proof that looks like it was carved from ice, probably a MS65-66. i figure someone must have just stole that one and cashed it in.
i guess i'll do a search for any double dies. and deposit the rest in my account. thanks guys |
Re: anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
I also did what you did with the banks. I suprisinly found quite a bit. However, i went to the smaller towns.
You should ONLY save 1968 and older. 1965-1968 are 40% clad and contain .14792 of an ounce of silver (even though you cant sell them for that 1964 and older are 90% silver and contain .361689 of an ounce of silver. I hope you know that you dont even have to look at the years of the coins from the bank. Just look at the side and you can see the differnce. Once you pull them out then look at them |
Re: anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
:cool2: Went to six different banks and asked for half dollar rolls.
None had any....hadn't had any in five years. No plans to include half dollars in their public coin inventory. Obsolete coinage...turned all they accumulated back to the nearest FR. Same story every bank....they refuse to even special order them. Went to another state....repeat of the above. Wherever you guys live they still circulate...not so around my area. I haven't received a half dollar in change in over fifteen years....they seem to have disappeared as common change.:eek::eek: |
Re: anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
I've ordered a $1000 a few times and found nothing. Then when I tried to turn them back into the bank, they gave me crap because they weren't rolled. In the end I just took the $1K and bought A MARK rounds.

Re: anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
:D Anty Ep:
Talked with the store manager of a local (HUGE) truck stop plaza this morning,it's located on the interstate. He said to his knowledge he hasn't saw a half dollar come through the cash registers in his memory. He has been manager there for a little over three years... As I said....half dollars are extinct in my area. I will call my brother in law in Florida and ask him to pick up a couple hundred rolls if the banks down there still have them. I will post the outcome if he gets lucky. Maybe it's just a local thing...weird,but true. :coolbeer: |
Re: anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
I also went through a piggybank full of coins with my kid, who had accumulated a fistful of halves, and we found 2 40%-ers. That was a pain in the neck though and the only pre65 coin we found was a nickel. so that aspect was a bust.
the days of coin prospecting are over. |

You might want to change your angle. Try the merchant teller or ask for both the IKE dollars and 50 cent pieces. Tell them you need it for poker night. Most times they will go around and gather them up from other tellers. In the past when I asked for rolls without the excuse I would get shot down quite often. Also try it about 3 or 4 times per bank. If they don't have any that is where you deposit them so they have them for the next poker night. You know there is a collector in the bank when they always say they just shipped some out. That is another reason to deposit them back to that branch. Best of luck 65GT350 |
Re: anyone know what $.50 pieces i should save?
I went to EVERY bank in 2 counties!!! ( i live in iowa ) and i never had a problem with me taking either all their halfs or $200-400 worth. If they asked i always told them i was starting a coin collection, but i never told them about the silver coins . If you tell them they will look.
And yes you arent going to see many halfs going through the cash register. THATS A GOOD THING. This means that if banks do have silver halfs they are just sitting in their fault. I went to one bank and they only hadnear $65 worth of halfs but 2 out of 3 were silver!!! I also am good friends with the Caseys general store (gas station) manager and she saves all the silver coins for me and i buy them from here. She doesnt come across much but about once every other month she gets some. |
